US Congressional delegation arrives in Cuban capital

  • A US Congressional delegation arrived in the Cuban capital Havana, the first such high-level visit since the two countries agreed to take steps towards normalizing relations (January 18).

The Democrat leaders will meet Cuban officials and other key figures to discuss further steps required to restore ties, which were snapped in 1961.

US president Barack Obama and Cuban leader Raul Castro had announced the thawing in relations on December 17.

Cuba has released more than 50 political prisoners as part of the agreement between the two sides.
