US, Australia lift sanctions against Fiji

  • The United States and Australia have lifted sanctions against Fiji after democratic elections there, according to media reports.

On a two-day visit to Fiji, Julie Bishop, Australia’s foreign minister, described it as the beginning of a "new era" in the two countries’ relationship. She said all remaining sanctions had been lifted.

Frankie Reed, the US ambassador to Fiji, said US restrictions on financial assistance to Fiji’s government were being lifted.

In September's election, former military ruler Voreqe Bainimarama’s party emerged winner.
