US army set to reduce troops by 40,000 over two years
July 8 , 2015
The US army is set to reduce its force by 40,000 troops over the next two years as part of a cost-cutting exercise, media reports said.
Another 17,000 civilians employed in the US army will also be cut.
The troop level will fall to about 450,000 by the end of 2017, reports say.
During the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, the US army’s troop level was 570,000 at one stage.
While 10,000 American troops remain in Afghanistan, some 3,500 personnel are in Iraq to help local forces in the fight against Islamic State.
