US and Taliban reach Violence Reduction Accord, US Troop Withdrawal to Start in 10-days if Taliban Sticks to its Commitment

  • The United States has reportedly reached an agreement with the Taliban on violence reduction after a protracted negotiation in Doha (capital of Qatar). The announcement of the deal was done after a meeting took place among the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, the US Defense Secretary Mark Esper, and the President of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference. If the accord holds good then it may pave the path for an agreement to withdraw more than 5,000 US troops from Afghanistan in the first 135 days after the deal is signed, which is most likely to be announced in the coming 10-days. Meanwhile, a 7-days violence reduction agreement has been announced this week. The Afghan President is cautiously hopeful about US-Taliban deal as the sincerity of the Taliban in entering an agreement is till now unproven.
