Uruguay is country of the year on the Economist

  • South American nation Uruguay is the "country of the year" on the Economist's list.

The editors explained that they looked to pick a country not on the basis of its leader or GDP but instead one with "path-breaking reforms that do not merely improve a single nation but, if emulated, might benefit the world."

Uruguay not only legalized gay marriage but also the consumption, production and sale of weed. It has Jose Mujica as its president, who "lives in a humble cottage, drives himself to work in a Volkswagen Beetle and flies economy class."
