Uruguay decides against granting asylum to Guantanamo inmates
March 24 , 2015
Uruguay’s new government has indicated that it will stop granting asylum to Guantanamo Bay prisoners.
Uruguay had granted asylum to six inmates of the US-controlled detention center in December. The six Arabs had been held for 12 years in the base in Cuba.
According to opinion polls, a majority of Uruguayans were against the decision taken by Jose Mujica, the outgoing president. Mujica had described the asylum offered to the men as a “humanitarian gesture”.
