Uruguay Congress approves gay marriage bill

  • The lower chamber of Congress in Uruguay on Wednesday approved a proposal to legalize gay marriage.

The bill had already received the support of the Senate.

It makes Uruguay only the second country in Latin America to legalize same-sex marriage, after Argentina.

In recent years, Uruguay has voted to allow same-sex civil unions, adoption by gay couples and to allow gay individuals to join the armed forces.

Argentina legalized gay marriage in 2010. Same-sex marriages have been legal in Mexico City since 2009.

Last May, Brazil's Supreme Court voted by an overwhelming majority to allow same-sex couples the same legal rights as married heterosexuals.
