UN warns of a health risk
May 9 , 2014
A new UN report reveals that 1 billion people around the world don't have any access to toilets and "defecate in gutters, behind bushes or in open water bodies, with no dignity or privacy."
Reuters notes that the number has fallen down from 1.3B but it's still quite high since the practice puts people at a major health risk.
India is at the top of the offenders' list with about 600M of such impoverished people. The report also mentions that people don't understand that the practice is risky for them. India's UNICEF is now attempting to spread the word by using an animated character with the name of "Mr. Poo."
