UN Security Council Adopts Historic Resolution to Protect Heritage

  • As per reports, the United Nations Security Council took a strong step against unlawful destruction of global cultural heritage sites by saying the perpetrators could be prosecuted for war crimes. The resolution which was unanimously approved by the Security Council, calls for protection of historic sites and monuments against attacks for destruction, theft or trafficking in conflict zones regardless of geographies.

The countries are called by the new resolution to create specialized units to protect cultural heritage and stronger co-operation between nations to prevent trafficking of goods from cultural sites situated within conflict zones.

The French minister of Culture, presenting the text together with Italy also pointed out that the trafficking is often a source of fund for terrorism.
