UN extends staff benefits to gay couples, votes against Russia's resolution

  • Defeating Russian opposition to the measure, the UN has extended staff benefits to gay couples working for the organization.

Russia’s resolution, backed by countries such as India and China, lost 43 to 80 in the vote.

This effectively gives recognition to same-sex spouses, irrespective of whether gay marriages are legal or not in their home countries.

Samantha Power, the US ambassador to the United Nations, accused Russia of trying to “export to the UN its domestic hostility to LGBT rights”.
