UN Experts Ask Myanmar to Release Two Investigative Journalists Detained Since December
April 15 , 2018
United Nations human rights reporters as well as foreign minister of Britain have separately asked Myanmar to release two reporters (32 years old Wa Lone and 28 years old Kyaw Soe Oo) immediately after Judge Ye Lwin rejected a defense request for dismissing the case. In a joint statement, the U.N. special rapporteurs called the reporters’ detention a “grave concern for investigative journalism”. The reporters are behind bars since December for lack of evidence. The Yangon court is holding preliminary hearings against the duo against possessing secret government papers under Official Secrets Act. The maximum penalty, is found guilty, is 14 years in prison.
