UN announces humanitarian ceasefire for 'urgent aid' to reach Yemeni civilians

  • The UN has announced a humanitarian truce in conflict-hit Yemen to allow aid to reach desperate civilian populations facing a famine threat. Fighting will cease till July 17, the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

Last week the UN had said that half of Yemen’s regions were grappling with a food crisis.

The UN said the aid must reach the affected people “unimpeded and through an unconditional humanitarian pause”. Four in every five Yemini nationals are in need of aid, estimates say.
