Ukraine conflict: Rebels 'on the offensive' in Donetsk

  • A key separatist leader in eastern Ukraine has rejected truce talks with the government in Kiev, saying his forces are on the offensive.

Alexander Zakharchenko claimed his men would push the front line to the Donetsk region's borders.

The pro-Russia rebels are in control of Donetsk city.

Meanwhile, accusing Ukrainian government troops of “criminal” targeting of civilian areas, Russia’s president Vladimir Putin said Kiev had “ordered the start of major combat operations".
