Ukraine Conflict: Kerry accuses separatists of 'blatant land grab'

  • John Kerry, the US secretary of state, has accused rebels in eastern Ukraine of carrying out a “blatant land grab,” according to media reports.

Reports have indicated that the pro-Russia separatists have extended the area under their control in apparent violation of a ceasefire agreement.

Kiev says that more than 9,000 Russian troops are directly involved in the fighting against government forces, but Moscow has rejected the claim.

Kerry described the increased intensity of fighting in recent weeks as "an alarming situation."
