Ukip gets its second elected MP as Reckless wins bypoll

  • In another blow to the Tories, Ukip’s Mark Reckless won the Rochester and Strood by-election, becoming his party’s second elected MP in the UK according to media reports.

Reckless got 16,867 votes, ahead of Conservative candidate Kelly Tolhurst who took 13,947. Labour's Naushabah Khan came a distant third with 6,713.

The Greens and Lib Dems came fourth and fifth, respectively.

Reckless, who had defected from the Conservative party, said if Ukip can win the bypoll it can “win across the country.”
