UK to give extra $7.8 million to Syrian opposition groups
August 11 , 2012
The British government is to provide extra funding of $7.8 million in non-lethal equipment to opposition groups in Syria.
Foreign Secretary William Hague said the UK’s commitment was "the right thing to do" and will "help save lives".
The funding for the unarmed opposition members includes medical supplies and radio and satellite equipment.
However, it will not include weapons and comes in addition to $43 million in humanitarian aid.
An uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has led to 17 months of violence, during which an estimated 20,000 people have died.
