UK ends support for migrant rescue operations in Mediterranean
October 28 , 2014
The UK will no longer support search and rescue missions in the Mediterranean to save refugees and migrants, according to media reports.
Britain says such rescue operations merely encourage other people to attempt taking the dangerous sea route.
The decision has been slammed by rights groups.
The UK foreign office said the “most effective way” to stop people from trying to cross the Mediterranean is by focusing on the “countries of origin and transit” and cracking down on people smugglers.
