U.S. to halt Egypt aid

  • The United States is quietly halting its aid to Egypt, at least on a temporary basis and Saudi Arabia on the other hand is announced that it will fill the void.

Saudi Arabia is the biggest donor amongst the Gulf countries that are planning to provide a $12 billion aid to Egypt.

The finance minster of Saudi Arabia said "concerning those who announced stopping their assistance to Egypt or threatening to stop them, the Arab and Islamic nation is rich with its people and capabilities and will provide a helping hand to Egypt.

This announcement could anger more than only those in Washington since Saudi Arabia is directly confronting the Muslim Brotherhood, which has "broad regional sympathy", as noted by an expert.

According to an official, the U.S. is not publicly announcing the halt, which will give the "administration the flexibility to reverse it".
