U.S. Navy ship fires on boat near UAE port
July 17 , 2012
A U.S. navy ship has fired on a boat off the coast of the United Arab Emirates.
The USNS Rappahannock ignored warnings and rapidly approached the ship before firing a vessel on it.
The boat appeared to be a civilian vessel. It has not been confirmed where the crew of the boat are from.
According to UAE officials, an Indian fisherman has been killed and three more injured.
The United States has ramped up its presence in the Gulf following renewed threats from Iran to close the strategic Strait of Hormuz, through which 20 percent of the world's oil exports pass.
The threats come on the back of increased pressure from the U.S. and the EU to block Iranian oil imports over the country’s controversial nuclear program.
