U.S. astronaut Neil Armstrong dies

  • U.S. astronaut Neil Armstrong has passed away at the age of 82.

Earlier this month, the first man to set foot on the Moon had surgery to relieve blocked coronary arteries.

He walked on the Moon on July 20, 1969, famously describing the feat as "one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind".

Last November, Armstrong was honored with the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest U.S. civilian award.

Armstrong took his first flight at the age of six with his father, which sparked his lifelong passion for flying.

He flew Navy fighter jets during the Korean War in the 1950s and went on to join the U.S. space program in 1962.
