Typhoon survivors killed in rice stampede
November 14 , 2013
Relief operations have reached the Philippines but the situation is still desperate for thousands of people affected by Typhoon Haiyan.
Eight people died in a stampede in Tacloban since a crowd stormed inside a rice warehouse.
"One wall of our warehouses collapsed and eight people were crushed and killed instantly," a National Food authority spokesman said. He mentioned that their staff couldn't do anything since their safety would have been at risk.
The spokesman said some people in the crowd were looking to make money by selling the grain to survivors of the storm. "Some people are really hungry but others just wanted to ransack for money."
The official death toll in the region has reached 2,344.
