Typhoon Koppu approaches Philippines, country on alert

  • The Philippines is bracing itself for Typhoon Koppu which is expected to bring heavy rain and cause flooding over the weekend.

    President Benigno Aquino has warned the six million residents in the direct path of the storm to be prepared for evacuation, saying that it could bring 12 hours of rain and lead to severe flooding.

    Typhoon Koppu is expected to strike the northern Luzon island early on Sunday.

    The Philippines is frequently hit by deadly storms. The devastating Typhoon Haiyan killed more than 6,300 people in 2013 and caused widespread destruction.
