Typhoon Kalmaegi makes landfall in China's Hainan province

  • Schools were shut, scores of flights cancelled and thousands of people evacuated to safer places as Typhoon Kalmaegi hit Hainan province in southern China.

In Hong Kong, 29 people were injured after strong winds lashed the city. Many shops and schools remained shut.

The typhoon earlier passed the Philippines, shutting off power supplies. Bad weather in wake of the storm sunk a ferry in the central Philippines on Saturday, killing at least six people.
