Turnbull doesn't rule out Australian peacekeepers for Syria

  • Australia’s prime minister Malcolm Turnbull has indicated that Australia could send peacekeepers to Syria if progress is made at the G20 summit on finding a political solution to the Syrian conflict.

Turnbull said it would be better to get peacekeepers from Syria’s neighbors to begin with as they are likely to find “greater acceptance” from local communities, but he did not rule out a contribution from Australia.

The five permanent members of the UN security council have agreed to back and implement a ceasefire in Syria as soon as Syria’s government and the country's opposition start taking steps towards forming a transitional governing body.
