Turkish President Erdogan Wins Referendum to Expand Presidential Powers
April 17 , 2017
As per reports, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has won a historic referendum which will help him expand presidential powers until 2029.
Out of 9.45% of ballots, count for the 'Yes' campaign was 51.37%, while for 'No' it was 48.63%.
According to Erdogan supporters, replacement of the parliamentary system with an executive presidency will help in modernizing the country.
However, two opposition parties may challenge the results as they have criticized the decision of accepting unstamped ballot papers as valid unless those are proved.
Reports also say that a dispute over how some people were voting left three persons dead near a polling station in the south-eastern province of Diyarbakir.
