Turkey Shuts Wikipedia as Part of its Security Crackdown

  • As per reports, Internet users in Turkey were denied access to Wikipedia as the government extended its crackdown on those opposing the current government.

In its recent clampdown, over 9,000 police personnel have been suspended and over 1,000 detained for suspected links with the Fethullah Gülen, the US-based cleric suspected to be behind the failed coup attempt last year against President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Also suspended were 1,127 prison guards and officials, 201 staff members of the religious affairs directorate and over 490 academics and intellectuals.

Turkey has come sharp criticism from the EU which has now suspended talks on the country’s proposal for joining the EU.
