Dec 17, 2016 3:00 PM: A car bomb exploded near a public bus carrying soldiers in Turkey's Kayseri province today, killing 13 soldiers and wounding 48 more. The blast happened near Erciyes University in the central province of Kayseri. According to a statement given by Turkey's Armed Forces, the soldiers were low-ranking privates and non-commissioned officers who had been granted permission for leave from the commando headquarters in the city. The statement further said that the wounded were being treated in the hospital and that there could be civilian casualties too. The explosion follows the double bombing in Istanbul on December 10 which killed 44 people. Turkey's Deputy Prime Minister Veysi Kaynak has noted that the bomb attack in Kayseri was "unfortunately similar" to that of Istanbul. Kurdish militants claimed responsibility for that attack.
