Tunisia to bury assassinated opposition leader
February 8 , 2013
Tunisia is to bury assassinated opposition leader Chokri Belaid later today as tensions escalate over his murder.
Further clashes are expected to take place as the country’s largest trade union called a general strike on Friday.
They claim the government led by the Islamist Ennahda party is responsible for Wednesday's assassination of Belaid, who was shot in the neck and head in the capital, Tunis.
Belaid was the coordinator of the left-leaning Democratic Patriots party and a staunch opponent of the Ennahda party.
In a bid to ease the situation, Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali has attempted to form a non-partisan government of technocrats to run the country until elections can be held.
However, his party has refused to accept this.
Belaid’s death was the first political assassination since the Arab Spring uprising of January 2011.
