Tunisia extradites former Libyan PM
June 25 , 2012
Libya's former Prime Minister al-Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi has been extradited to Libya from Tunisia, where he had fled following last year’s uprising against Col Muammar Gaddafi.
Mahmoudi served as prime minister from March 2006 but fled Libya after Gaddafi's forces lost control of the capital Tripoli.
Mahmoudi is the first senior official to be returned for trial.
He was arrested in Tunisia in September for illegal entry. A six-month prison sentence for that offence was overturned on appeal but Mahmoudi remained in Tunisian custody following the extradition request from Libya.
Libya's new government has vowed to treat all detainees fairly.
