Truck full of radioactive material stolen in Mexico
December 5 , 2013
A truck full of dangerous radioactive material was stolen near Mexico City on Monday. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said the stolen cobalt-60 could be used in a dirty bomb.
"At the time the truck was stolen, the source was properly shielded," the UN agency said. "However, the source could be extremely dangerous to a person if removed from the shielding, or if it was damaged."
Armed men stole the truck while it was being ferried between a hospital and a storage site; Mexican and US officials are now on the case.
Although, a dirty bomb wouldn't cause as many fatalities, it could cause "mass panic, as well as serious economic and environmental consequences."
IAEA gets over 100 similar reports every year.
