Tropical Storm Isaac hits Florida
August 27 , 2012
Tropical Storm Isaac swept across the Caribbean to south Florida with strong winds and heavy rain.
Hundreds of flights have been canceled and half of U.S. offshore oil output may be disrupted by the storm that has already claimed the lives of six people in Haiti.
The Republican Party has also been forced to delay the start of its national convention in Tampa by a day.
Isaac is expected to strengthen to a Category 2 hurricane and hit the Gulf Coast between Florida and Louisiana at midweek, which could coincide with the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC). A storm becomes a hurricane when sustained winds reach a minimum of 74 miles per hour.
