Trial of Uighur scholar Ilham Tohti begins

The trial of Ilham Tohti, an Uighur scholar accused by authorities of “separatism,” has begun today (Wednesday) in China, reports say.
Human rights groups have slammed the trial. The trial of the 44-year-old Tohti is being held at a court in Urumqi, capital of the autonomous Xinjiang Uighur region.
A conviction, which appears likely, can carry a sentence ranging from 10 years to life.
An ex-professor of economics at Beijing’s Minzu University of China, he was arrested in January.
