Tony Abbott calls for relook at burqa ban
October 3 , 2014
Australia’s prime minister Tony Abbott has told the parliament Speaker to rethink plans to ban women with covered faces from entering the House’s main public galleries.
He said “common sense” should be the deciding factor when it came to public access to the parliament.
The new rules, which were announced by parliament, required women with facial coverings to sit in a separate, shielded section. While the ban did not specifically mention garments worn by Muslim women, it was widely understood to target burqas and niqabs.
