Thousands of Syrian refugees flee violence
July 21 , 2012
Thousands of Syrian refugees are fleeing into neighboring countries as fighting between government forces and rebels escalates.
The United Nations refugee agency says up to 30,000 people are believed to have crossed into Lebanon over the past 48 hours.
The UNHCR says there are already 26,900 registered Syrian refugees in Lebanon.
Around 2,500 people have also arrived in Jordan over the past four days, adding to the 35,000 registered Syrian refugees already there.
Meanwhile, the UN Security Council on Friday agreed to extend its observer mission in Syria for a "final" 30 days.
The decision comes as clashes continue in the capital Damascus.
