September 3 , 2017
Over 18,500 people from Rohingya community (Muslim ethnic community with an estimated population of 1.1 million) have fled Rakhine state of Myanmar and took shelter in Bangladesh after escalation of conflict between Myanmar security forces and Rohingya militants. UN sources claim that around 20,000 more refugees are still stranded in the no man’s land between Myanmar and Bangladesh. Reports say that over 400,000 Rohingya refugees have taken shelter in Bangladesh till now. Refugees have reportedly claimed that security forces and Buddhist nationalists are indiscriminately killing civilians and burning villages. Systematic discrimination has been reported against Rohingya community people as Myanmar considers them illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and denies citizenship to them.
