Thousands gather to watch Queen's Diamond Jubilee pageant

  • Tens of thousands of spectators braved rainy conditions in London to watch the Queen's 1,000-boat Diamond Jubilee pageant make its way down the River Thames.

Queen Elizabeth II, the Duke of Edinburgh and other senior royals travelled aboard the royal barge, decorated with almost 10,000 cut flowers.

The Spirit of Chartwell was greeted by a 41-gun salute as it neared the Tower of London at the end of its seven-mile journey.

The event marked 60 years of the Queen’s reign. It began with the ringing of the Jubilee bells at 14:40 BST and ended nearly five hours later after the last vessel completed the route from Albert Bridge to Tower Bridge.

Some 20,000 people were in the boats of the flotilla.
