'There is room for discussion,' Hong Kong leader tells students
October 22 , 2014
Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying said he is willing to create a more democratic selection panel before the 2017 polls, in a bid to reach out to students who have been calling for democratic reforms during several weeks of unprecedented street protests, according to media reports.
However, Leung indicated that Beijing would continue to have an effective say in vetting the next chief executive of Hong Kong. He said he was open to talks with students and the larger community on making "the nominating committee more democratic.”
