The United States Stops Funding of UN Agency helping Palestinian Refugees
September 1 , 2018
The USA has stopped all kinds of funding to a United Nations agency that helps refugees from Palestine. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s spokesperson has called the US decision “a defiance of U.N. resolutions”. While announcing the halt of funding to the concerned United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said that the agency’s fiscal practices, as well as the business model, are an “irredeemably flawed operation”. UNRWA spokesman Chris Gunness called the US decision surprising as U.S. funding agreement back in December acknowledged the successful management by the UN agency. He not only voiced deep regret and disappointment of the agency but also rejected the criticism in the strongest terms possible.
