The President of Honduras says Drug Fund Laundering Allegations are Fabricated by Drug Cartels

  • The Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez has opposed a report of Univision (a Spanish language broadcaster based in the US) that implicated him in a campaign finance conspiracy. The concerned 44-page document said that the Honduran President’s brother, Juan Antonio “Tony” Hernandez, will be trialed on drug trafficking charges in New York. The document also contains a testimony from a person who seems to be a former official. The President of Honduras acknowledged that such a document has indeed been placed before a US judge. However, he also said that the allegations are “made by a drug trafficker”, which are completely false. Juan Orlando Hernandez has reportedly implemented a tough policy against both drug cartels and street gangs after coming to power in 2014. However, in 2017, during a trial, a Cachiros gang leader testified that the Honduran President’s brother took a bribe for helping them launder drug funds.
