Thailand: Former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra's trial begins
May 19 , 2015
Yingluck Shinawatra, the former Prime Minister of Thailand who was forced to step down before a military coup in 2014, has pleaded not guilty to charges of negligence in a hearing as her trial began.
Shinawatra has maintained that the charges she faces, linked to her role in a rice subsidy scheme, are meant to keep her away from politics.
She could spend up to 10 years in jail if the court finds her guilty of dereliction of duty.
