Thai ex-PM Yingluck Shinawatra to stand trial
March 19 , 2015
Former prime minister of Thailand, Yingluck Shinawatra, has been ordered by the country’s Supreme Court to face trial over a bundled rice subsidy scheme. This has come as a major blow to the Shinawatra family and could possibly end the spell of their dominance in Thai politics. According to media reports, the trial will start on May 19 and Yingluck Shinawatra can face up to ten years in prison if found guilty. The controversial rice scheme paid farmers twice the market rate for their crop. However, the programme cost the government billions of dollars.
