November 18 , 2014
A new report says that terrorism-linked deaths have risen nearly five times since 9/11, despite efforts led by the US to confront it in many parts of the world, including the Middle East.
According to the Global Terrorism Index, terrorism was responsible for around 18,000 fatalities last year, 60% more than the previous year.
Four terrorist groups have been largely responsible for a majority of deaths, the report says. These are Islamic State (in Iraq and Syria); Taliban (in Afghanistan); Boko Haram (in Nigeria); and al-Qaida (in several countries).
