Ten killed in Iraq car bomb

  • A car bomb near the southern Iraqi city of Basra killed 10 people and wounded numerous others on Sunday.

The blast occurred near a bus station in Garmat Ali, some 11 miles north of Basra. Earlier in the day, another bomb to the west of the city injured two people.

The bombing comes just days before the 10th anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

Basra is the country’s main port and has a predominantly Shia Muslim population.

In recent weeks, violence in the region has escalated due to ongoing protests by members of the Sunni minority against the Shia-led government.

Sunni militants, some of whom are linked to Al Qaeda, often target government officials and buildings along with members of the Shia majority.
