Ted Cruz becomes first Republican to confirm US presidency bid

  • Ted Cruz has become the first Republican to confirm that he is running for the 2016 US presidency.

The 44-year-old senator, a favorite of the Tea Party, said in a Twitter video post that the US needed a “new generation of courageous conservatives”.

While other leaders have not formally declared their presidency bids, Jeb Bush and Chris Christie are expected to be among the Republican contenders for the White House.

Cruz was elected to the Senate in 2012.
