Tamam Salam named as new Lebanon prime minister
April 8 , 2013
Sunni politician Tamam Salam was nominated this weekend to become Lebanon's next prime minister.
His nomination was announced on Saturday by the president's office after he received the support of parties across the political spectrum, including Hezbollah.
The last government, led by outgoing PM Najib Mikati, resigned two weeks ago due to escalating tensions over the upcoming elections, which are expected to be held in June.
Political tensions also intensified because of the ongoing conflict in neighboring Syria.
Many Sunni Muslims support the Syrian rebels while the militant Shia movement Hezbollah back President Bashar al-Assad.
