Taliban opens first office in Doha
June 19 , 2013
The Taliban opened their first office on Tuesday in the Qatari capital of Doha in a bid to initiate peace talks with the Afghan government.
The development marks the first major step in reaching a peace deal to end the armed conflict between Kabul and the insurgent group.
According to a Taliban official, no date has yet been set for peace talks with government representatives from Kabul.
However, U.S. officials said they will meet with the Taliban "within days" to begin the "first step on a long road…in distancing the movement from international terrorism”.
