Taliban close to capturing Sangin

  • Reports coming from Helmand, a province located in southern Afghanistan, say that the Taliban is close to overrunning Sangin. Mirza Khan Rahimi, governor of Helmand, said that the authorities were in control of the town; however, his deputy, Mohammad Jan Rasulyar, said that Sangin has been overrun by the militants. The Taliban were quoted as saying that they were in command of most of the strategically important town of Sangin and the main administrative building has been abandoned.
