Syria's weapons may be burned at sea
November 21 , 2013
No nation wants Syria's chemical weapons to be destroyed on its soil. For instance, thousands of people in Albania protested, after which the nation turned down the request.
Hence, the US has a new proposal: Destroy the weapons at sea.
The US will provide military for security purposes but won't supply personnel or ships in order to implement this proposal. The operation would instead be overseen by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).
Although, the US suggested incinerators, the plan could also work with the Pentagon's new Field Deployable Hydrolysis System, which would make these chemicals harmless.
Officials haven't commented on whether or not the residue will be dumped into the water.
