Syrian forces reclaim Palmyra
March 27 , 2016
Syrian government forces have retaken the ancient city of Palmyra from Islamic State in the battle that lasted 3 days. The army now aims to use the desert city as a base to expand military operations against the terrorist group in Raqqa and Deir Ezzor where the IS fighters have repeatedly retreated. The recapture of Palmyra marks a significant advance towards the collapse of Islamic State. The city of Palmyra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has many remarkable monuments and number of historical sites which have been destroyed by ISIS since they captured the city, the most prominent of them being 2,000-year-old Temple of Bel and the Arch of Triumph.
