Syrian rebel commanders have said they have lost control of the Salah al-Din district in the city of Aleppo following a government offensive.
The army has bombarded the northern city in a bid to recapture areas seized by rebels.
According to state media reports, the army was in full control of the district and had inflicted heavy losses on hundreds of "terrorist mercenaries".
Meanwhile at the United Nations, diplomats have said former Algerian Foreign Minister Lakhdar Brahimi could be named as Kofi Annan's successor as peace envoy.
